DIY Outdoor Firepit
Weekend project idea that you will wish you did sooner

There is nothing quite like sitting around a fire on a summer night with friends. When we bought our home three years ago, one thing we knew we had to add was an outdoor firepit. While it didn't happen right away, we did get to it eventually (there were a lot of other things on our list too). Here's how we did it.

First we decided how big we wanted it. We have friends over pretty often and we wanted to make this a gathering area so we decided to go big. We had a small metal pole that we stuck in the ground where we wanted the middle of the firepit to go. We tied a string to it and measured nine feet. Then we took some spray paint and sprayed the grass at the end of the string going around the entire circle. After that, we started digging.

This part of our lawn had a slight incline to it so we really had to make sure we were creating a level surface. That meant that one side (toward the right in the photo above) we had to dig deeper than the other side. We decided to put some pavers on the deeper side and I really love the way it turned out. You can see below how we stepped it up as the ground on that side got higher. We bought the pavers form Home Depot and we bought some masonry glue to hold them in place.

We used a Breeo stove because there is nothing like a smokeless firepit. Once you've sat around a smokeless firepit, you'll never go back to the old way. It is amazing and there really is no smoke once it gets nice and hot. We used an insert ring and built up a little wall around the stove as you can see in the picture above. It's important to make sure there is air flow underneath the firepit. The insert ring allows the firepit to sit suspended above the ground a couple of inches. The air flow is important for the smokeless feature.
We put down cardboard to help block weeds and then got about a yard and a half of stone from a local aggregate company. We bought some tiki torches, tiki fuel and some adirondak chairs and we now have a firepit that we absolutely love!
